Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don’t consider them to be genuine scientific endeavours. Some of the common misconceptions linked with hypnosis and the truth behind them are discussed here.
Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. It hinges more on the science of psychology and is very easy to practice for anyone who is willing to learn it. The authenticity of hypnosis is suspected even by people who have watched it working on subjects. They believe that the people who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not strong enough to withstand the impact of the practitioner. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Even people with strong will power can fall under the charms of an expert hypnosis practitioner.
Another false belief about hypnosis that people have invented without reason is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A hypnotized person is completely aware of his environment. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes completely and is thus able to focus fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.
Another misconception, which has been propagated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can be applied on merely 5% of the human population. The researchers are to some extent true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis method without considering individual differences in nature and disposition. People differ in their natures and personalities, and hence there have to be different hypnosis methods to suit the temperaments of different people.
Many people consider hypnosis to be a form of meditation. However, meditation is a purely personal feeling that has got no involvement of communication, whereas communication is an integral part of any successful hypnosis. Similarly, a period of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not true. The individual doesn’t interact to achieve a state of trance, whereas hypnosis is not possible without communication.
Another myth is that bodily and behavioural changes in a person are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is abnormal to the body. However, it can guide the body to a better shape through behavioural transformations like eating in a controlled manner, and giving up smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a high level of motivation in an individual.
If an individual falls for all the misconceptions that exist regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t venture to participate in a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a happier and healthier life.
