How To Readily Distinguish If Somebody Is Lying

by Xavier J. Murphy on September 11, 2010

Being able to tell when somebody is lying is a great skill to have. It’s actually a lot easier to learn than most people realize. There are some generalized ways to tell, and some person specific ways. You’ll learn both ways in this article.

The common ways are numerous, and vague. If you can, it helps out to look for three or four different indications before you charge the person of lying out-and-out, or make a decision not to take them at their word.

Face Touching

When people touch any part of their face while chatting, it can be an indication that they are lying. Usually they will contact their eyes, their nose, or their lips. These will often be rapid, unconscious movements. Be careful, though, as this may also be an indication that they are only nervous. An additional suggestion of lying is excessive blinking. Generally speaking, people blink more often. This transpires when they are in a situation where frequent eye touching would be inappropriate. A politician giving a speech, or testifying under oath, for example.

Legs And Arm Crossing

When people cross their legs and their arms, it can be taken as a symbol of being self-protective. Particularly if they are standing, with their legs crossed near the ankle, and their arms crossed in front of them. This can be an indication of lying, or it could mean that they find what they are saying enormously unpleasant. You’ll need to take the context into contemplation.

Eye Contact

When people tell stories, it is very hard to look somebody else in the eye and keep a straight face, so to speak. In this case, a straight face is all their facial muscles comfortable, with no anxiety or twitching. The best liars can maintain eye contact while chatting right up to the instant of lying, and then even they will have to look away momentarily.

Calibration

This where you calibrate on an individual basis. This can be done with human resources, spouses, offspring, anybody who you are in a relationship with that you worry may lie in the future. Just pay close attention to any precise body language or facial articulation they make when you know they are lying.

This, of course, requires you let a few lies slip by unimpeded, but what they are doing is giving away their “tells,” as they say in cards. Tells are unconscious body movements and facial tics that card players display when they are bluffing. After you have three or four “tells” together, they’ll never be able to lie to you again without you realizing it.

Readily and universally utilize your astounding subconscious mind power with powerful nlp techniques.
