How to Change a Bad Habit

by Trevor Landon on July 2, 2011

People want to change. Maybe, it is because of discontentment; or maybe, they aim to be the best. Change may come as starting to eat vegetables for your fitness and health; or it can be as dramatic as quitting cigarettes.

There are so many aspects in our lives that require change: our weight, our eating habits, our relationships with the family, our work habits. We can’t possibly change them all at once.

To begin the change process, start with a simple reflection: what can you change and when can you do that? It is also important to identify which changes you want but you believe you cannot do on our own. Some people require the help of professionals, especially when it comes to addictions.

A trend these days is to use meditation and hypnotherapy as part of the change process.

Terry Hodgkinson, author, martial arts and meditation instructor, and personal development coach, is one of the pioneers in using hypnotherapy to help clients in their desire for change. “Our minds work on two levels – conscious and subconscious. We make decisions, think, and act with our conscious mind. The subconscious controls our habits. In hypnosis the conscious mind is relaxed, while the subconscious becomes more aware. Positive suggestions given by the hypnotherapist are readily accepted in this altered state. Also, the subconscious is not subject to time. This is why our clients often state that their new habits seem “easier” and ” more effortless” after hypnotherapy .”

But how will you know whether you can do it on your own or whether you require help? This is a guide to assist you in sorting it out:

1. Is your will strong enough to begin this change process right now? Willpower fluctuates and is very dependent on your present life circumstances. If you are going through crisis, your willpower might be weak and it won’t help you commit to that change you are looking for.

2. If your will is strong enough, make a list of three things you want to change right now – things that cause trouble or disappointments.

3. Look at each item and think of what you would need to change about yourself.

4. Identify which habit would be easiest to change and begin with that. Walking every day is much easier than quitting cigarettes. But if you can commit to walking every day, you feel good about yourself and it builds your confidence to move to more difficult habits.
