Basic NLP Techniques And Methods

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) has many uses for helping people to better their lives and create more successful relationships with others. This guide looks at some of the most common NLP techniques in use. One such use is to help you create better goals by focusing on what you want and how to get it, rather than focusing on what you don’t want to happen and problems that might arise. This increases the likelihood of positive outcomes as it stops you thinking so negatively.

In NLP, another common technique revolves around learning the practice of ‘good’ eye contact. This involves adapting to the needs of each individual person you are talking to as the goal is to make them feel comfortable. The NLP technique is to work out their preferred method of eye contact and then adapt yourself to that. For instance, some people find it odd when you don’t look at them, while others don’t like being looked at for any length of time.

Building rapport is important for relationships and it’s also a large part of NLP techniques. This helps to make people feel reassured and comforted when they’re with you, largely through your tone of voice. For instance, if you match a person’s tone of voice and the similarities there, they are more likely to feel like they have something worthwhile in common with you. Taking notice of their body movements and responding accordingly can also help to build rapport with a person.

You can also learn a lot from body language, as suggested above, and one common NLP technique is to use body language to work out when people are intentionally or unintentionally concealing something for you. NLP practitioners are good at observing the way people act and they pick up on their habits really quickly. Things like muscle movements, eye contact, tone of voice and skin tone can all be really revealing with the people you work with, so make sure you pay attention.

Lastly, discovering your anchors is another important NLP technique. This involves identifying what causes you to feel depressed so you can become aware of the issue and ultimately have more success in neutralizing it and moving on from the problem. This can help to lift bad mood and alleviate negative reactions to certain situations. Anchors are essentially things that provoke a trigger response in you – a more lighthearted example would be the urge to eat when you watch a commercial about food.
